what is ultimate frisbee?
Born in the United States in 1968, Ultimate Frisbee is a self-refereed team sport played with a disc. A match is played 7v7 on a field 100 meters long and 36 meters wide.
There are now several million Ultimate players around the world. Ultimate is the fastest-growing sport in the world in terms of participants. This encouraged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to officially recognize Ultimate in 2015 as a discipline.
In addition to its ever-growing popularity, it is above all the sport's two key values that have attracted the IOC's attention: fair play & diversity.
On the field, players are responsible for any fouls they commit, and each player has the power to stop the game, so from a very young age, the notion of fair play is emphasized in order to make each player aware of his or her responsibilities. In Ultimate, it's essential to know the rules, and to play with respect for others.
In terms of diversity, tournaments usually comprise three main divisions: Open (mostly male-matching players), Mixed (50-50) and Women, in different age categories.
Apart from these aspects, the sport is very demanding in terms of physical fitness, pure technique and strategy/vision of the game, which makes it an attractive challenge for many people.
What about Belgium ?
In Belgium, the sport was born 40 years ago. In recent years, Belgium has seen an explosion in the number of players: as recently as 2013, only 3 major clubs were active. Ten years later, 35 clubs nationwide are officially affiliated to the national federation, with a player base now approaching 3,000.
Belgium is one of the strongest nations in the sport worldwide.
At the youth level, the U24 Open national team took silver at the World's U24 championship in Nottingham, UK.
In December 2022, Belgium won the European Indoor Championship title in the Open division, claiming the first gold medal of the country’s history in a major tournament.
Finally, last July, Belgium won the European Outdoor Championship title in the Open division in Limerick, Ireland. Winning “Euros” is the highest achievement a country can get in Europe.
However, there is still one more competition Belgium needs to prove itself: Worlds Ultimate Championship.
